10 Places to visit in Kodaikanal

I always remember Kodaikanal from childhood films and books. Usually if hero and heroine get married and discuss about the prospect of honeymoon, they would invariably mention Ooty or Kodaikanal or both. Kodaikanal was not just famous, it was almost the one of the very few options available back then.

Times have changed. Now not just affluent, even upper-middle class families prefer foreign trips over local. That does not mean the popularity has come down; Kodaikanal is still popular as a honeymoon destination and a relaxed getaway.

I am not sure whether I have stated before, but hill-stations are more of an experience than sightseeing. If you go with expectations of seeing “SOMETHING”—you will be disappointed. ( I have few friends who complained that they found nothing). Hill Stations are for enjoying the weather where you have to hug yourself (or the other person), enjoying the sights from a great dome of hill overlooking an amphitheatre of rich and desolate sunsets or golden sunrises. Here is the list of places from Kodaikanal where you can enjoy the above poetically mentioned things.

(This is not an order of preference.)

  1. Dolphin’s nose : A valley where the a rock projection shaped like dolphin nose. You have to walk a bit in Dangerously monkey infested area to reach this.

  2. Kodaikanal lake – Beautiful man made lake. Offers a relaxing walk or tiring boat rides.

  3. Pillar rocks : I would consider them to be kinda iconic of Kodaikanal

  4. Suicide point : It was some cruel person who named this awesome view point as suicide point. It was given a delightful name as Silent valley view point.

    Is not it delightful?

  5. Guna caves: Got its name after the Tamil movie Guna was shot here. This place many small scale food vendors who serve steaming, spicy food in that awesome, chilly weather. Stay safe from our dear monkey friends.

  6. Silver cascade waterfalls: This was the first thing which greeted us on entering Kodaikanal. As it was summer, the falls was not in its full potential. Still, a lovely watch.

It was summer, so falls were slim

  7. Bryant Park: It is more of botanical garden almost at the heart of city. It has a beautiful flower garden. You can even buy plants.

  8. Croaker’s walk: This is located at the ridge of a vast valley offering mind blowing views. Buy some snacks and enjoy the walk.

  9. Berijam Lake: This is situated in Berijam forest and you need special permission for it. I am planning to write an entire post about the visit.

  10. Chettiyar park: We spent way too much time in Kodaikanal, visiting the same places again and again. After multiple visits to each place, we started exploring other options and found this lovely park.

  11. Kurinji Adayar Temple: It doesn’t matter whether you are religious or nonreligious person, this temple is going to please you: with its breathtaking location.

  12. This and that: Kodaikanal is a beautiful, cozy town. If you get time to stroll around those sloppy streets, you get to see many colorful structures. We had chance to roam around and visit this particularly beautiful locality with lovely houses. We spent an entire hour walking up and down the streets.

Summer vacation? 10 cool tips to survive

So summer is here and this is the favorite time for  everyone, especially Indians to plan a vacation. But as you know the earth is burning with too much temperature and summer vacation can prove exhausting if proper care is not taken.

1. Destination:

Choosing destination can be tricky. Beaches are fun but at the same time, they are too ‘hot and humid’ to handle.
Places with too many tourist spots can exhaust you in summer. You can consider national parks or hill stations instead.
Hill stations are ‘risk-free’ places. The weather will be pleasant, there are not many strenuous things to do. I am planning one this may.

2. Think about road trips twice.

Road trips are fun but during summer you have to reconsider them. Vehicles like bikes and cars (where the  roof is too close to the people inside) increase the possibility of sun stroke and can turn your summer vacation into a nightmare.

3. Timing

No matter where you are, make sure that you do not wander outdoors between 11 am to 4pm which is the ‘danger zone’. I know it is not possible when you are in a trip, but during this time visit places like museums, zoos so that the exposure is limited.

4. Use proper shield

Do not ever neglect your self. When you are outside, use proper covering for mouth, nose and ears from hot wind. Hot wind increases the risk of dehydration. Use a hat or an umbrella to give your body protection. Goggles are a must have during summers.

5. Sunscreen

Most of the people neglect this part. Unless you want to end up with a nasty tan after the trip, use required amount of sunscreen to all exposed parts of the body. Re apply it once every 3-4 hrs to ensure that it works.

6.Food

Street food is always awesome, but in summer when you are prone to dehydration and gastroenteritis, please stay away from the food which is very hot, very oily or which does not appear safe. During the day frequently eat pieces of cucumber and watermelon which help you get enough hydration for body.

7. Hydration

Always carry a bottle with you, no matter where you are going. Who knows you might go exploring an off-beat place where water is not available or water is not safe. If you are too lazy to carry a heavy water bottle, carry a purifying pen empty purifying water bottle. You are more prone to dehydration when you are wandering outside. So, make sure to drink at least 15 glasses of water. Coconut water is a very good companion in summer. In addition to the water volume, it provides mineral supplementation. Drink coconut wherever it is possible.

8.Skin care

Summer can become an enemy to skin, If proper care is not taken. Excessive oil and sweat can cause troublesome irritation, rashes, prickly heat, exacerbation of acne. Change your skin care products to suit this season. Use tissues to wipe sweaty face to avoid acne. Use face packs with aloe vera gel, sandal wood powder to soothe the skin and body.

9.Clothing

Choose cotton and linen clothes for the season. Loose fitted clothes give you comfort and flexibility. Remember that dark colors absorb more heat.

10. Medicine

Carry some emergency medication like anti emetics, anti-motility drugs and most importantly few

packets of Oral rehydration powder. If you suspect dehydration and are stuck at some place with limited medical facilities, simply start drinking O.R.S powder mixed with water.

Follow these tips and make your summer vacation memorable.
